In the large enterprise, IT-delivered productivity has plateaued at automating the real or physical world workflows. In the past, IT could deliver productivity gains in the 4% range—a huge corporate and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contribution. But IT professionals have squeezed all the juice from that orange. Today, most IT business leaders expect 1 to 0% productivity gain through traditional IT, such as large enterprise back office applications like CRM, databases, etc., and office productivity tools. At ONUG, it’s been known that productivity gains and…
The ONUG Community is in the vanguard of migrating of enterprise IT applications to hybrid multi-cloud environments. While the business benefits are real, this effort is not without its challenges. Hybrid multi-cloud infrastructure is cloud-scale, confronting IT managers with application performance management challenges beyond the capabilities of existing tools and techniques for traditional enterprise IT. The good news is that in this new era, IT managers can leverage the same cloud-scale technologies enabling this migration for ensuring application performance in what are proving to be…
The White House is taking aggressive action against China for illegal trade practices as well as intellectual property theft. It’s important to understand why and implement countermeasures to ensure your data is safe. Drive through middle America and you’ll see closed factories whose products are now manufactured in China. For the past few decades China has implemented an aggressive policy of stealing manufacturing technology and then providing zero interest loans to Chinese companies to re-create American products. The transfer of wealth to China from the…
As we celebrate the 30 year anniversary of one of the networking industry’s most prolific standards, 802.11, I can’t help but think about what new standards will drive the adoption of IT for the next 30 years. As we all know, standards are not only critical for getting new technologies going. They are also essential for widespread adoption, as they set the bar for quality, innovation, and multi-vendor interoperability. So, is there a new technology that promises to change the IT landscape forever, but requires…
A few ONUG Board members expressed that behind ONUG is a huge gold mine. What they mean is that the ONUG Community has a wealth of market knowledge and requirements to buy solutions to address digital transformation initiatives. It communicates aggregated requirements in many ways, via its working groups, fireside chats, session topics, keynote speakers, blog posts, proofs of concept, use case voting, etc. ONUG Conferences are the gathering place for IT business leaders of the largest enterprises in the Global 2000 with an annual…
To Secure the Digital Economy, a New Relationship between Industry and Federal Government Is Needed As the economy goes digital, are our current institutions, technologies, legislation, processes, etc., sufficient to secure our digital future? The headlines over the past 18 months make it clear that the answer is no. Many believe that we are on the precipice of a future where one or more Fortune 100 companies may have to file for bankruptcy due to the damage done by being cyber attacked if the status…
Why Should YOU, as an IT Professional, Become an ONUG Community Member? At a recent ONUG Board meeting, members shared that vendors are offering a 40 to 70% consideration/discount on infrastructure products and services when the vendor realizes they are an ONUG Community member. I was surprised to hear this. Others were surprised to hear that they were not the only ones receiving these discounts. Also surprising is that the discounting was not just from one vendor but from multiple vendors. This prompted a pretty healthy discussion about what…
Software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) has come a long way since ONUG ignited the conversation about the market and practical use cases for this promising new technology just four years ago. Eighty-seven percent of 800 network management executives use or plan to use SD-WAN within the next two years, according to a March 2017 IDC survey of mid-size and large companies with at least 10 locations and representing a variety of industries. SD-WAN sales are predicted to grow at a 69 percent compound annual growth rate, reaching $8.05 billion in 2021, notes IDC’s Worldwide SD-WAN Forecast for 2017–2021.
I’ve always had a lot of respect for veterinarians, because they are masters at solving problems based purely on fuzzy symptoms that their patients cannot explain: where it hurts, how long it’s been hurting, and what events led up to the problem. Many times the patients don’t even know they are sick. Yet a vet is able to make educated guesses with the data they do have, which often results in successful diagnoses and treatments.
There is an arms race raging between cloud and IT platform providers, and the war is about to take place in the large enterprise. As Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Oracle focus on the large enterprise market, they have traditional IT platform providers in their crosshairs; that is, HPE, Dell/EMC, Cisco, VMware, IBM, et al. Cloud providers have been hugely successful in the small to mid-sized enterprise market but have struggled in the large enterprise market, thanks to security, compliance and the overall complexity of the…
