Looking Ahead to 2022

2021 has been a tremendous year for the ONUG Enterprise Cloud Community of Global 2000 IT business leaders, developers and sponsor members. 2021 broke all attendance records and marked the start of a massive IT enterprise cloud 2022 spending cycle. In 2020 – 2021, ONUG held four digital events attended by well over 13,000 enterprise attendees and built a community that is stronger than ever as we approach our 10-year anniversary and get back to in-person meetings!

ONUG is in the most powerful position to host 2022 in-person events thanks to the insights gained over the past two years of community interaction/collaboration plus massive community growth of over 500%. All indications point to 2022 being the year of the enterprise cloud!

Over these two years, the ONUG Community has been defining and building the next generation of software-based enterprise cloud infrastructure to service digital consumers, partners, suppliers and employees.

The community is on a rapid adoption cycle of complex multi cloud architectures that incorporate on-prem, public cloud and edge computing solutions to meet the needs of the modern digital enterprise.

As the ONUG community accelerates their build of multi-cloud infrastructure, they seek solutions for the following multi-cloud areas:

  • Networking (SASE+, Zero-Trust, Cloud Edge, 5G, Campus, Data Center, Remote Workforce Infrastructure)
  • Security (Cloud Security Notification Framework (CSNF), Automated Cloud Governance (ACG), Cloud Native)
  • Observability/Monitoring/Visibility and AIOps
  • Automation and Orchestration

The ONUG Community collaborates to define and identify the building blocks of the digital enterprise that is rapidly adopting software infrastructure and services to enable excellent digital experiences and fulfillment. ONUG enables this collaboration through multiple interactions:

  • NEW in 2022: Live multi-vendor/multi-cloud building block demonstrations based upon its Working Group frameworks
  • Defining uses cases (Aggregating Requirements)
  • The ONUG Collaborative and its Working Groups
  • Proof-of-concept demonstrations
  • Live and virtual conferences, events and webinars
  • Hands-on training, instruction and education

ONUG is directed by a board of the world’s leading IT executives providing direction for the ONUG Community, all of which attend every ONUG. In the ONUG Collaborative, its Steering Committee members of Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, IBM Cloud, Oracle Cloud, FedEx, Cigna, Raytheon Technologies, Fidelity Investments and Cisco have joined to develop the Cloud Security Notification Framework’s (CSNF) Decorator. These companies along with Intuit, Adobe, Goldman Sachs, Kaiser Permanente, Sysdig, Wiz, Concourse Labs and others are now defining a common data model to wrap attributes around cloud security logs, alerts, events, etc., so that the industry has a standard way to express, ingest and “decorate/enhance” cloud security notifications from on- and off-prem sources.

Of special note, in August of 2021, the ONUG Board announced the appointment of Shannon Lietz, vice president of Vulnerability Labs at Adobe, to the ONUG Board as co-chair alongside Nick Lippis and Ernest Lefner, co-founders of ONUG. Further, Yesim Akdeniz, managing director of architecture, technology and engineering at Citigroup, was appointed to the ONUG Board as well.  Shannon and Yesim along with Suzan Mahboob of Blizzard Entertainment and ONUG Board members are driving ONUG’s Board to a 50/50 male/female population by 2025.

If you seek customer engagement, insights and partnerships in building, managing, and securing the next generation enterprise cloud infrastructure, then ONUG is your home…. Welcome to the future of the Enterprise Cloud.

Join the community  at the following events:

ONUG Spring, April 27-28, 2022

ONUG Fall, October 19-20, 2022

10 Years of ONUG, a Look Back at our History

2012 Co-founders Nick Lippis, of the Lippis Report, and Ernest Lefner, formerly of Fidelity Investments, identify the need for a user-focused conference where IT executives can share best practices and challenges as they transformed their IT infrastructure for the digital economy. ONUG is created.

November, 2012 – ONUG’s Founding Board of Directors is created and includes IT leaders from the likes of Bank of America, Fidelity Investments, UBS and Gap Inc. The first ONUG event was held on February 13, 2013, at the Fidelity Auditorium in Boston, Massachusetts.

2013 – 2019 – ONUG grows to a community of 40,000 members who engage through webinars, in-person events and the ONUG Working Groups, which consist of solutions providers and major cloud consumers, all working together to identify and break down barriers that ultimately generate industry change and drive cloud adoption

ONUG had evolved through three phases.

Phase 1: 2013-2015  ONUG defines SD-WAN and sets it on its trajectory to USD 8.4 billion by 2025 (Markets and Markets projection)

Phase 2: 2016-2018: ONUG defines Hybrid/Multi-cloud as the new enterprise computing model and sets it on its trajectory to USD 173.33 Billion by 2025 (Market Research Future projection)

Phase 3: 2019-2021: ONUG defines Enterprise Cloud Edge and sets it on its trajectory to USD 61.14 billion by 2028 (Grand View Research projection)

2020 –  Formation of the ONUG Collaborative
During the winter of 2019, Gene Sun, James Beeson and Daniel Conroy, CIOs of FedEx, Cigna and CTO of Raytheon Technologies, respectively, founded the ONUG Collaborative with Nick Lippis, co-founder and co-chair of ONUG. Its charter is to identify and provide solutions to cross-industry enterprise issues such as cybersecurity and data protection, which are significant areas of concern to large corporations. The first project of the Collaborative was to organize a working group focused on automating cloud governance (ACG). The Collaborative now comprises eight Working Groups in total and are open to cloud vendors, cloud providers and IT executives.

2021 – At ONUG Fall 2021, the ONUG Collaborative’s Automated Cloud Governance (ACG) Working Group demonstrated the Industry’s First Multi-Cloud Demonstration of the ONUG Cloud Security Notification Framework (CSNF) Decorator. The CSNF “Decorator” is a tool that democratizes data by adding standard attributes to data that can be consumed by a wide range of machines. The canonical data model and its decorators are solving the cloud security problem.

August, 2021 ONUG announces the appointment of Shannon Lietz, vice president of Vulnerability Labs at Adobe, and Yesim Akdeniz, managing director of architecture, technology and engineering at Citigroup, to the ONUG Board.

Phase 4: 2022-2024: ONUG expands to include developers to the ONUG Community of enterprise cloud consumers and providers of cloud computing and on-premise solutions.

2022 – Live multi-vendor demonstrations take place at ONUG.  ONUG is an open source community, and we anticipate well over 100 contributors to the Canonical Data Model during 2022 via github repo.

We will be kicking off a verification, testing and certification working group. An additional working group will be formulated around extensibility of the decorator with an eye toward prioritization of what the Collaborative should tackle next.
